Hyderabad Cyber Fraud: Fake RTO Challan Apps Steal Rs 6 Lakh

Hyderabad Cyber Fraud:

Two residents of Hyderabad have become victims of a cyber fraud after unknowingly installing fake RTO challan applications sent through WhatsApp. Together, they lost nearly Rs 6 lakh in unauthorized online transactions.

Hyderabad Cyber Fraud:

In the first incident, one victim received an APK file titled “RTO Challan.” Believing it to be genuine, he downloaded and installed the app. Soon after, he noticed that over Rs 1 lakh was withdrawn from his two bank accounts without his knowledge.

In the second case, another resident received a file named “RTA Challan 140.apk.” Once installed, the fraudsters gained full access to his phone. Within a short time, he lost about Rs 5 lakh through fraudulent transactions.

Police warning

Cybercrime officials explained that such APK files are malicious software. Once downloaded, they secretly take control of a person’s phone, steal sensitive details like banking information, and enable criminals to carry out unauthorized money transfers.

The police have strongly advised the public to stay alert and avoid clicking on links or downloading files received from unknown numbers on WhatsApp or other messaging platforms. They reminded that government departments like the RTO or traffic police never send challans in the form of APK files. Instead, people should always check official websites or authorized apps for any traffic penalty information.

Officials also highlighted that cybercriminals are using new techniques every day to trick people. Fraudulent apps, phishing links, and fake customer care numbers are among the most common methods. Elderly citizens and those who are not very familiar with digital platforms are often easy targets.

Safety measures

To stay safe, experts suggest a few precautions:

Never install APK files sent by unknown people.

Verify traffic challans only through official government websites or trusted apps.

Regularly update banking passwords and enable two-factor authentication.

Report any suspicious activity immediately to the local cybercrime helpline.

The Hyderabad police have assured that efforts are being made to trace the fraudsters. Meanwhile, they continue to spread awareness so that citizens can protect themselves from such financial scams.
