India Supports Trump-Putin Summit in Alaska, Amid Tariff Disputes

India Supports Trump-Putin Summit:

On August 14, 2025, India’s Ministry of External Affairs expressed its support for the upcoming summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. The summit, scheduled for August 15, could potentially address key issues, including the U.S. tariffs imposed on India. Randhir Jaiswal, the Ministry’s spokesperson, emphasized India’s commitment to peace efforts in Ukraine, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s belief that “it is not an era of war.” India is ready to back the summit’s efforts to end the ongoing conflict.

India Supports Trump-Putin Summit:

The meeting between Trump and Putin comes at a time when U.S.-India relations are strained over energy purchases from Russia. Trump had earlier criticized India for buying Russian crude oil. He argued that this supports Russia’s military actions in Ukraine. He linked these purchases to his decision to impose additional tariffs on India. He accused the country of fueling Russia’s war machine. India responded firmly. It stated that its energy imports depend on market factors. The goal is to secure energy for 1.4 billion people. India also said the tariffs were unjustified.

Despite the tensions caused by the tariffs, officials remain optimistic about the long-term relationship between the two countries. Jaiswal pointed out that India-U.S. relations have survived previous challenges and that both nations are focused on advancing mutual respect and shared interests.

In addition to the U.S. relationship, India has also been making strides with China, particularly in trade. The two nations are working towards resuming border trade through designated points like Lipulekh pass, Shipki La pass, and Nathu La pass. Indian officials noted that India’s efforts to improve ties with China are separate from its relationship with the U.S., and both tracks will continue to develop independently.

As global tensions continue, India remains focused on promoting peace and stability, supporting diplomatic efforts, and protecting its own strategic interests.
