Indian Stock Market Sees Short-Covering Rally, Sensex Soars

Sensex Soars :

The Indian stock market faced mixed cues on August 12, 2025, as key global developments shaped market trends. Analysts expected the benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty 50, to open lower, reflecting the weak start from the Gift Nifty, which traded around 24,580—down nearly 47 points from the Nifty futures’ previous close.

Sensex Soars :

On Monday, the Indian stock market saw a surge, with the Sensex gaining 746.29 points, or 0.93%, to close at 80,604.08, while Nifty 50 rose by 221.75 points, or 0.91%, to end at 24,585.05. Short-covering primarily drove this rally, with broad-based buying across sectors. Ajit Mishra, Senior VP of Research at Religare Broking Ltd., noted that investors had largely absorbed tariff-related concerns and now focused on corporate earnings as the results season neared its end.

In Asia, markets traded higher, with Japan’s Nikkei 225 reaching a new record high, climbing 2%. Other markets like South Korea’s Kospi and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng saw positive movements, while Wall Street ended lower after investors awaited further developments on the US-China tariff situation.

The US and China agreed to extend a tariff truce for another 90 days, which temporarily alleviated trade tensions. However, despite the positive Asian market cues, US stock markets struggled, with the Dow Jones and S\&P 500 both closing lower. Tech stocks like Nvidia and Apple saw mixed performances.

Oil prices rose due to the truce, with Brent crude futures gaining 0.30% to \$66.83 per barrel and US West Texas Intermediate rising by 0.25% to \$64.12. Meanwhile, gold prices saw a modest increase as investors awaited US inflation data, with spot gold rising by 0.3% to \$3,355.59 per ounce.
