For train travel at the last minute in India, IRCTC has the twin options of Tatkal and Premium Tatkal. Both have been provided for passengers requiring tickets on an urgent basis, but the booking rules, price structure, and availability are different for these two types. Knowing features difference greatly increases your choice of method so that you can avoid any last-minute complication when travelling.
Definition of Tatkal Booking
Tatkal simply means “immediate,” it is an advanced ticketing scheme offered by Indian Railways, in which the passenger can book a ticket on the day just before the date of travel. The Tatkal booking opens at 10:00 AM for air-conditioning classes and from 11:00 AM for sleeper classes. Tatkal fare consists of the base fare with the additional Tatkal charge valid as fixed for all classes for a given distance.
Key Features:
Opens one day before departure.
Limited quota available.
Dynamic pricing not applied.
Refund is not allowed on cancellation (except for waitlisted tickets).
Premium Tatkal Booking
An upgraded version of Tatkal, Premium Tatkal is an offering subjected to dynamic pricing. This category was introduced to meet a higher demand and, of course, to generate more revenue. Premium Tatkal fares are attained subject to demand and are more highly sought after, meaning quicker bookings.
Key Features:
Opens together with Tatkal.
Dynamic (surge) pricing based on demand.
No concessions or waitlisted bookings.
Suitable for those who want confirmed seats and are willing to pay.
Analysis: Which One Should You Go For?
Tatkal is the best pick if you’re an economical traveler considering a fair chance to get bookings. However, things get fast; the seats are filled faster. If it is costlier than benefiting a confirmed seat, go with Premium Tatkal as Premium Tatkal has much fewer applicants and has a higher success rate in secured seats. But the downside is the fare with a large difference.
