IRCTC Update: A sleeper train, Vande Bharat-format, and most pioneering among such train services in the Indian railways will be inaugurated by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in September 2025. This marks an advanced event in overnight rail travel. Built with ICF technology through BEML and ICF, the train will have 16 coaches in the following comfort areas: AC First Class, 2-Tier, and 3-Tier, with a total holding capacity of 1,128 passengers. Vande Bharat Sleeper Train launch Details Out.
The sleeper variant is the addition of exclusive features that no other Vande Bharat profile will have:
Hot-water showers for AC First Class passengers—an Indian Railways first
USB-linked reading lamps; real-time passenger information systems; CCTV supervision; modular pantry units; sensor-based touch-free bio-vacuum toilets
Audio-visual facilities available in addition to berth provision for accessibility as well as toilets designed differently for differently-abled passengers
Automatic sensor interconnecting doors and talk-back units for inter-coach communication
Speed That Redefines Overnight Travel
The sleeper train runs at an exceptional maximum speed of 180 km/h, making it one of the fastest overnight trains in India, greatly slashing journey times on some of the important routes.
Expected Routes Under Consideration
Final routing approvals are pending by the Railway Board among a number of long-distance corridors:
Infrastructure & Production Plans
A dedicated Vande Bharat Sleeper coach depot and workshop in Bengaluru is under construction and targeted for commissioning in early 2026. Up to three sleeper trainsets will be produced by mid-September—an enormous leap from the first prototype, which completed testing in the early part of 2025.
To begin with, Indian Railways plans an initial production run of ten Vande Bharat sleeper trains, with a pipeline that could reach up to 50 more units.
Affordable Comfort for the Middle Class
The middle class would have been considered because the train variant was designed for easy access at reasonably low fares, making it an interesting alternative to air travel for long distances.
