ITR Filing Deadline Extended Again ; Here’s Until When

ITR Filing Deadline:
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has given relief to taxpayers by extending the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR) for Assessment Year (AY) 2025-26. Earlier, the last date was September 15, 2025, but it has now been extended by one day, making September 16, 2025 the final date.

ITR Filing Deadline:
This decision came after many taxpayers and chartered accountants reported difficulties while using the Income Tax Department’s e-filing portal. Issues like trouble accessing the site and delays in tax payment led to repeated complaints. To fix this, the CBDT extended the date so that taxpayers would get extra time to complete their filings.

The Income Tax Department also informed that the e-filing portal would remain under maintenance from midnight to 2:30 AM on September 16 for technical updates. Despite these challenges, the department recorded a huge number of filings. More than 7.3 crore ITRs were filed till September 15, 2025, which is higher than the 7.28 crore returns filed in the previous year. Officials thanked taxpayers and professionals for their cooperation and timely efforts.

To assist users facing portal-related problems, the IT department shared some troubleshooting tips. These included deleting temporary files, clearing browser cache and cookies, using the latest versions of Chrome or Edge, trying incognito mode, disabling extensions, and even switching networks if required. They also advised taxpayers to contact their helpdesk, which is available round the clock, for support.

Additionally, the department requested users who continue to face problems with uploading returns to share their details, PAN, and mobile number with them via email for quick resolution.

For those who still have not filed their returns, this one-day extension serves as an important opportunity. Missing the final deadline could lead to penalties, interest charges, and difficulties in claiming refunds.

In short, the CBDT’s decision provides last-minute relief to millions of taxpayers, ensuring that everyone gets a fair chance to complete their ITR filing without unnecessary stress.
