ITR Portal Facing Glitches: Will Government Extend the Deadline?

ITR Portal Facing Glitches:The last date to file Income Tax Returns (ITR) is just a few hours away, and lakhs of taxpayers are worried. The government had already extended the deadline once, from July 31 to September 15, 2025. But now, as the date comes to an end, the Income Tax portal is giving many problems.

ITR Portal Facing Glitches:

Taxpayers and chartered accountants have reported that the portal is extremely slow, sometimes showing errors, and even blocking login access. Because of this, many people are unable to file their returns on time. On social media platform X, hashtags like #Extend\_Due\_Date\_Immediately are trending, where users are sharing screenshots and videos of the technical glitches.

Many financial experts and organizations have also requested the government to extend the deadline again. More than 16 professional bodies have sent official requests. One user wrote that without an extension, lakhs of taxpayers might face penalties for no fault of their own.

According to government data, more than 6 crore ITRs have already been filed this year. Last year, the number was 7.28 crore, and this year, experts expect the total to cross 8 crore filings. However, tax experts say that the chances of another extension are low.

Avinash Polepalli, Business Head of ClearTax, explained that since most taxpayers have already filed their returns, the Income Tax Department might not extend the date further. He advised taxpayers to try and complete the filing before the September 15 deadline to avoid penalties.

The Income Tax Department also said its helpdesk is working 24/7 to assist people with their filing process. Still, the complaints of glitches are rising, and taxpayers are waiting for a final decision.

For now, the safest option is to file ITR immediately, even if the process takes time. Whether the government will give more time remains to be seen.
