Karnataka Scam: Clerk With ₹15,000 Salary Owns ₹30 Crore Assets

A former clerk employed by Karnataka holds a shocking amount of wealth valued more than ₹30 crores, although he earns a small salary. This revealation has lead to huge corruption in Karnataka Rural Infrastructure Development Limited (KRIDL).


 

Who is the Ex-Clerk?

Kalakappa Nidagundi worked for Karnataka Rural Infrastructure Development Limited (KRIDL), based in Koppal, as a clerk. He earned a small monthly salary of ₹15,000. His assets include 24 houses, approximately 40 acres of land, and many noteworthy articles.


 

Discovery and Raid

While carrying out anti-corruption initiatives, officials of the Karnataka Lokayukta raided Nidagundi’s home, and their findings included assets valued at ₹30 crores. The asset holdings are as follows: 24 houses, four plots of land, and 40 acres of farmland.

 

Valuable Items Found

The investigators also recovered gold and silver valued at nearly ₹30 lakhs (350 grams) and more than 1.5 kilogrmas, respectively. Further found were two cars and two two-wheelers owned by Nidagundi.

 

Fraud and Embezzlement Allegations

Nidagundi is accused of misappropriation (embezzlement) over amounts greater than ₹72 crores. He was working in relation with ex-KRIDL engineer ZM Chincholkar. From providing incomplete work, they produced fake bills for 96 infrastructure projects.

 

Ongoing Crackdown

This raid is part of the bigger crackdown conducted by the officials of the Lokayukta in Karnataka which have been targeting officials for suspected ownership of disproportionate assets, and many workers of the Government in Karnataka have come under investigation.

Other Officials Under Investigation

Others being questioned as part of the investigation are Jayanna R (Executive Engineer, National Highway Hassan Division), K Omprakash (Senior Assistant Director of Horticulture, BDA Bengaluru) and others. The Lokayukta team continues to investigate the property documents’, and cash holdings.

Lokayukta Investigation Team

 

CPI Parashuram Kavatagi led the raid. Dy SP Pushpalatha and Officer PS Patil carried out the investigation, and they are continuing to seek unaccounted wealth among the officials under investigation.
