Elon Musk has turned his fire on the Republican Party. Once a major backer of President Donald Trump, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO now calls the administration’s latest tax-and-spending package a “debt slavery bill.”
The legislation, titled One Big, Beautiful Bill, is part of Trump’s second-term agenda. It includes massive increases in defense, border, and energy spending. But it slashes funding for healthcare and nutrition. The Congressional Budget Office estimates the bill would raise the national deficit by nearly $3.3 trillion over ten years.
Musk condemned Republican lawmakers for supporting what he sees as the largest debt expansion in U.S. history. He accused them of betraying their promises to cut government spending.
He called out members of the House Freedom Caucus by name and warned they would face consequences at the ballot box. “They will lose their primary,” Musk wrote, pledging to fund challengers.
In a dramatic twist, Musk promised to form a new political party “the America Party” if the bill passes. He described it as an alternative to what he calls the “uniparty” of Democrats and Republicans.
Musk argued the bill would destroy clean energy jobs while propping up outdated industries. He claims it poses a direct threat to future U.S. innovation.
This feud marks a sharp break from their recent alliance. Musk donated over $250 million to Republican candidates during the 2024 election. He briefly served in a White House role focused on cutting government waste.
But since leaving that post last month, Musk has grown more vocal. Trump first responded with anger, calling Musk “disrespectful,” but later softened his tone, calling him “a smart guy.”
