New GST Rates on Movie Tickets: It is a good sign for all moviegoers across India that the new GST 2.0 reforms proposed by the government will come into play on 22nd September 2025, thus changing the GST on movie tickets into something more affordable.
Tickets up to Rs. 100: GST cuts from 12% to 5%
Tickets above Rs. 100: GST left unchanged, at 18%
The above reduction is significant for single-screen theatres and smaller towns, where ticket prices generally fall under Rs. 100.
Movies have always been considered one of the most respected entertainment in India; however, years of constant increases in ticket prices have created disinterest among many. The government aims to revive footfalls into cinemas, rejuvenate the film exhibition sector, and make entertainment accessible to a wider audience with the cut in GST.
Most glaringly, moviegoers save Rs 7 on each and every ticket. A ticket that cost ₹100 used to attract ₹12 of GST, putting it at ₹112. Now, with only 5% GST, it will cost ₹105, thus saving Rs.7 per ticket. With large families or groups, that can add up to a sizable amount.
Experts in this industry suggest that this change in ticket prices may encourage movie-lovers to visit theatres more often, given the tremendous popularity of OTT platforms. Reduced ticket pricing would thus attract an audience greater in number but mainly benefit smaller films and regional cinema. A buoyant comeback could be waiting for single-screen owners who have been struggling to stave off stagnation.

The GST cut on tickets costing below 100 is a very significant step towards affordable growth of the industry. It barely makes any difference for multiplex patrons paying anything above Rs 100, yet it would support the magic of cinema back into millions.
