In a major development, the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) on Tuesday ruled that the 17-year-old accused in the Pune Porsche crash will be tried as a minor. The decision comes nearly two months after the teen allegedly drove drunk and crashed his Porsche, killing two IT professionals in Pune’s Kalyani Nagar.
The court rejected the Pune police’s plea to try him as an adult under the Juvenile Justice Act’s ‘heinous offence’ category. The ruling has once again reignited public anger across the country.
The horrific crash occurred on May 19, 2024, when the teen rammed his luxury Porsche into a bike. The victims, Aneesh Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta, both in their early 20s, died on the spot. Eyewitnesses confirmed the teen was speeding and appeared intoxicated.
The teen initially received bail within hours. The JJB asked him to write a 300-word essay on road safety, a move that sparked massive backlash and forced authorities to send him to an observation home. His bail order triggered public protests and demands for stricter action.
Special Public Prosecutor Shishir Hiray argued that the teenager was under the influence of alcohol and tampered with blood samples. He cited Sections 304 and 467 of the IPC and said the charges qualified as “heinous.” He asked the JJB to treat him as an adult.
Defence lawyer Prashant Patil opposed the plea. He argued that the Juvenile Justice Act focuses on reformation, not retribution. “Trying him as an adult violates the spirit of juvenile law,” he said, quoting past Supreme Court rulings.

The ruling ensures that the accused will face trial under juvenile law. But with public outrage surging again, the case continues to highlight the gaps in how India handles grave offences by minors
