Rare Oil Painting of Mahatma Gandhi: An original oil portrait of Mahatma Gandhi was sold for Rs 1.7 crore at an auction held in London. The portrait is the highest selling item in the Travel and Exploration online sale. It is believed to be the first time Mahatma Gandhi sat in front of the artist to have his portrait drawn.

At an auction organized by Bonhams in London, this rare oil painting of Mahatma Gandhi was sold for £1,52,800 (roughly Rs. 1.7 crore). British artist Claire Lington’s portrait of Mahatma Gandhi was expected to fetch £50,000-70,000. But the film has received three times the amount. The film also became a best-selling film in Travel and Exploration online sales. Bonhams head of sales Rhiannon Demery said the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi had never before been sold at auction.

The portrait remained in Clare Lington’s personal collection until her death in 1989. It was later passed down through their family, so it’s no wonder the artwork has generated so much interest around the world, Demery added. In 1974, while on public display, the portrait was vandalized by Hindu right-wing extremists. The picture shows signs of repair at many places. In 1931, British American artist Claire Lytton painted this picture while Gandhi was attending the Second Round Table Conference in London, visiting him for several days.
