Richest and Poorest States in India: Goa has become the richest state in the country in terms of per capita income. Bihar has come last, recording the lowest per capita income. The Union Finance Ministry has presented the data in the Lok Sabha based on the per capita income of the states for the financial year 2023-24.
The average income of a person in Goa in 2023-24 was Rs 3.57 lakh. Sikkim (Rs 2.92 lakh), Delhi (Rs 2.71 lakh), Chandigarh (Rs 2.56 lakh) and Puducherry (Rs 1.45 lakh) are behind Goa. Kerala’s per capita income during this period is Rs 162040. Kerala is at 11th place. Per capita income is found by dividing the total income of the state by its population.
However, Bihar tops the list of states with the lowest per capita income, with an average income of just Rs 32,227. Uttar Pradesh (Rs 50,341) and Jharkhand (Rs 65,062) are next to Bihar, Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said in response to a question raised by MPs Giridhari Yadav and Dinesh Chandra Yadav on per capita income.
According to the data of the National Statistical Office, the country’s average per capita income in the year 2024-25 was Rs 1,14,710. Ten years ago, i.e. in 2014-15, it was Rs 72,805. While states like Karnataka (Rs 1.91 lakh crore), Tamil Nadu (Rs 1.79 lakh crore) and Telangana (Rs 1.77 lakh crore) have achieved good economic growth, the figures show that many states, including the eastern states, are still lagging behind.
The minister explained that there are many reasons for this economic disparity between states. The level of economic development, differences in each sector, and changes in governance systems could all be the reasons for this.
