As India returns to regular classes after the Diwali and Chhath Puja holidays, some states have once again declared school closures. This time, it is due to Cyclone Montha, which has caused heavy rainfall and strong winds in several coastal regions. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red and orange alerts for various districts in Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Telangana, advising people to stay indoors for safety.
In Andhra Pradesh, schools in many districts have been closed since October 27 and will remain shut through October 31. Areas like Kakinada, Chittoor, Nellore, East Godavari, Visakhapatnam, Guntur, and Prakasam have reported heavy rainfall. Several schools in these regions have been converted into temporary relief camps for residents displaced by floods. Over 10,000 people have been evacuated to these shelters as the cyclone continues to affect normal life.
In Odisha, all schools, anganwadi centres, and colleges in the Gajapati district remain closed due to the cyclone’s impact. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced that nine southern districts—Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, and Nabarangpur—are under red alert. The district administrations have extended school holidays to October 31 to ensure student safety amid continuous rain and waterlogging.
Telangana is also facing the effects of Cyclone Montha. Schools and colleges in Khammam, Bhadradri, and Kothagudem districts are likely to remain closed due to heavy rainfall warnings. The district authorities are closely monitoring the weather situation and may extend holidays depending on the intensity of rain.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu districts such as Chennai, Tiruvallur, and Ranipet are on orange alert, with local administrations deciding on holidays based on daily weather updates.
Parents are advised to follow official school WhatsApp groups and websites for real-time updates. IMD has also urged families to keep children indoors and avoid flooded areas.
As of October 31, most northern states have resumed regular classes after the festive break, but southern India continues to battle the effects of Cyclone Montha.
