School Holiday Today:
The month of Shravana, a significant time in the Hindu religious calendar, is at its peak. As a result, religious festivities like Kanwar Yatra and Bonalu have led to interruptions in school schedules in various cities. Due to the ongoing celebrations, many districts and states have announced a school holiday on Monday, July 21, 2025. If you’re a parent or student, check below for the details.
Religious fervor is at its highest during this time, and as part of the celebrations, schools in various cities will remain closed on Monday, July 21. According to an official notification from the Telangana government, schools in Hyderabad, Secunderabad, and surrounding districts will be observing a public holiday to mark Bonalu, one of Telangana’s most important traditional festivals.
Bonalu Festival 2025
Bonalu is celebrated during the month of Ashada (which usually falls in July). The festival holds immense religious significance, particularly in Hyderabad. Devotees participate in rituals, including offering a special meal (known as ‘bonam’) to the goddess Mahakali as an expression of devotion and respect. Due to the large number of devotees expected in the city, especially in the Old City, the authorities have granted schools in those areas an additional holiday on Saturday. Moreover, the government has declared a public holiday on Monday, July 21, to allow students and staff to join in the celebrations. However, schools are expected to compensate for the holiday by working on the second Saturday of August.
Kanwar Yatra and School Closures in Uttar Pradesh
In Uttar Pradesh, schools have been closed from July 16 to 23 due to the ongoing Kanwar Yatra. This decision, issued by the state’s basic education department, was taken for safety reasons. With a large number of devotees crossing through various districts, the closure applies to all educational institutions, including primary schools, high schools, CBSE, ICSE, madrassas, and even technical and higher education institutions. However, this decision has sparked criticism from parents and teachers who believe it disrupts students’ education for an entire week.
Stay updated with official notifications from the education departments for any further changes to the holiday schedule.
