Shubhanshu Shukla Returns Earth: India just got a very proud moment as astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla returned “safely” from his landmark space mission to Earth. This marks another important milestone for India’s human spaceflight program and places him in the elites among hundreds of explorers who have ventured out of the planet and came back safely.
As of 2025, more than 650 people traveled to space. Out of these, more than 600 have been returned back in one piece, making the travel to space as safe as it has probably ever been-and it was never unsafe-that much more. Because of this, the probability of successful return nowadays is extremely high due to the improvement of spacecraft design, life support systems, and detailed mission planning.
Advancements notwithstanding, space flight remains challenging. Sadly, fewer than 30 space travelers died due to an accident during launch, flight, or re-entry. Soyuz 1 (1967), Soyuz 11 (1971), NASA’s Challenger (1986), and Columbia (2003) missions serve as reminders of those risks.
Here are some stars in space who came back unharmed:
Yuri Gagarin – First human being into space (1961), safely returned after orbiting Earth
Neil Armstrong & Buzz Aldrin – First men on the Moon (1969), came back through Apollo 11
Sunita Williams – Spent more than 300 days in space, came back safely twice

Dennis Tito – First space tourist (2001). Came down safely after ISS visit
William Shatner – Actor flew to space at age 90 (2021), came back via Blue Origin
Shubhanshu Shukla’s return continues in the saga of the India’s space achievements. Scarcely more than 600 returns safe worldwide, and spaceflight remains an emblem for the human spirit of courage, science, and successfully engineered innovation.
