Students Violently Beaten After Refusing To Touch Teacher’s Feet In Govt School

An assistant teacher in Odisha is under suspension for hitting 31 students with a bamboo stick for not touching her feet after the morning prayer at a government primary school in Mayurbhanj district. Parents are angry and went straight to authorities for action.


 

The teacher behaved unusually and troublingly by breaking a boy’s hand and hitting another on the head. A girl fainted from the shocking punishment and received immediate help. Children showed bruises all over their arms. The local community is shocked.


 

The Event

The events occurred on September 11, 2025. A government primary school in Khandadeula village, students in Class VI, VII and VIII were all involved in morning prayers and it was time to return to class after the assembly. Sukanti Kar arrived late and did not like that students were not waiting to touch her feet. The students all received the deserved punishment as she walked into the students in upper classes and called them out for not touching her feet.

 

At least ten students stood up when called out to their embarrassment. The teacher lined the students up for a well deserved punishment. The teacher would swing the bamboo stick very hard on students backs and hands.

 

Students Struck and Hurt

Many kids came to school that had black bruising on their arms and hands were swollen. One boy broke his wrist, and another girl fainted and needed first aid fast. The students were then shifted to Betnoi hospital for treatment. Upon learning about the incident, the parents demanded strict action against the teacher for hurting their children.

 

 

Official Inquiry and Response:

Block Education Officer (BEO) Biplap Kar visited the school for the investigation. He confirmed the students had injuries and spoke to the teachers and school officials. The head of the school, Purnachandra Ojha, informed CRCC Debashish Sahu and the school management committee. The committee collected statements from students who reported injuries.

Based upon the pagentry report, the BEO suspended teacher Sukanti Kar. He said in a statement that Kar felt disrespected when the children didn’t show her traditional respect.

 

According to the Law:

It is illegal under the Right to Education Act to physically chastise children. Schools are supposed to provide a safe respectful environment for all children.
The education department has indicated that they will take subsequent action, to control incidents like this one. Moreover, the authorities have reminded all educators to be respectful and appropriately follow child safeguarding laws.
