Tech Giants Urge H-1B Workers to Stay Put

Tech companies are advising their H-1B employees to remain in the U.S. following a major visa fee hike introduced by former President Trump. Firms like Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, and JP Morgan are warning workers to avoid traveling abroad before the new rule takes effect.

New H-1B Visa Rule: A $100,000 Fee

Starting September 21, U.S. employers must pay a $100,000 fee for H-1B workers entering the country. This applies mainly to workers outside the U.S. who will be denied entry unless their employer has paid the fee. The rule also impacts workers with pending applications or new visa petitions.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will prioritize higher-paid H-1B applicants. The Department of Labor (DOL) will raise prevailing wage levels. National-interest exemptions are allowed, but further details are still pending.

Microsoft’s Advisory to Workers

Microsoft has sent an urgent notice to its H-1B and H-4 visa holders. The company recommends employees return to the U.S. before the September 21 deadline. Microsoft also advises workers to stay in the U.S. to avoid being denied reentry. The tech giant is aware of the short time frame for travel and is tracking employees abroad.

Amazon’s Call to Action

Amazon has issued similar advice to its H1B and H-4 visa holders. The company urges employees to return to the U.S. ahead of the deadline. Amazon also recommends that workers stay in the country to avoid complications related to the new visa rule.

Meta and JP Morgan Join In

Meta has told its H1-B and H-4 visa holders to stay in the U.S. for at least two weeks. Workers currently abroad must return within 24 hours to avoid issues. Similarly, JP Morgan has instructed its H-1B employees to return to the U.S. by 12:01 AM ET on September 21. They’ve been advised not to travel abroad until further notice.
