Trump Tariff Plans on India Set to Take Effect This Week

Trump Tariff Plans on India:

The United States has issued a notice signaling its plans to increase tariffs on products imported from India, a move that could affect trade relations between the two countries. The tariffs, initially proposed by former President Donald Trump, are set to rise to 50% on certain Indian goods, particularly those linked to the purchase of Russian oil. This draft notice, published by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on August 25, 2025, states that the new tariffs will take effect on products entering the U.S. after 12:01 AM EDT on August 27, 2025.

Trump Tariff Plans on India:

The U.S. administration’s decision is largely aimed at pressuring Russia to end its war with Ukraine by targeting its oil trade. This tariff hike comes at a time when efforts to broker a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine have stalled. By imposing the tariffs, the U.S. hopes to force Russian President Vladimir Putin to the negotiating table.

In response, India has strongly opposed these tariffs. Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized that the country would not compromise on the interests of its farmers, cattle rearers, and small-scale industries. He further stated that while the pressure from such tariffs may increase, India would continue to defend its economic interests. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar argued that the U.S. was wrongly framing the issue as an “oil dispute.” He pointed out that countries like China and several European nations also purchase Russian oil. They have not faced similar criticism.

This development marks a new chapter in U.S.-India trade relations. Both nations stand firm in their positions. The deadline for the tariff hike is approaching.
