Twin fetuses found in the stomach of a one-month-old baby! This is an incident that may be considered fake news at first glance. But a phenomenon that has been recorded very rarely in medical history has now been reported in Gurugram, India.
Two fetuses have been found in the stomach of a one-month-old baby. This is a rare phenomenon called ‘fetus in fetu’, where a deformed fetus grows inside another fetus. The incident has been reported from the Fortis Memorial Research Center in Gurugram.
The stomach of a one-month-old baby girl was unusually swollen. The parents took the baby to the hospital after the baby showed unusual symptoms such as difficulty in breastfeeding and other discomfort. During a subsequent scan, doctors discovered two fetuses that had not yet developed inside the stomach. The fetuses were then surgically removed under the supervision of the Department of Pediatric Surgery and the Department of Anesthesia.
“The biggest challenge was to operate on such a small newborn. Post-operative intensive care should also be very comprehensive to avoid accidents. Pain relief in small newborns is also a challenge,” said Dr. Anand Sinha, Director of Pediatric Surgery at Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram.
Known as fetus in fetus, this phenomenon occurs in only one in five lakh births in the world. Only thirty-five similar cases have been reported in the world so far. This is a condition in which a non-developing fetus grows inside the body of a healthy growing child. This condition occurs in the early stages of pregnancy. Often there are no symptoms. It becomes clear through scans during pregnancy and scanning in the newborn.
