US Lawmakers Defend India Ties, Criticize Trump’s Trade Tariffs

US Lawmakers Criticize Trump’s Trade Tariffs

Democrats stressed that India is important not just as an economic partner but also as a geopolitical partner in the Indo-Pacific. With the increasing tensions between the U.S. and China, they maintained. Trust with India was most vital for not just regional stability but also shared democratic values.

“There’s a message being sent by our government that subjecting one of our closest allies in Asia. To tariffs is the wrong message, and that weakens our stature to build alliances,” Representative Ami Bera, a senior Democrat of the committee, said.


The onslaught was directed at Trump’s 2019 decision to revoke India’s GSP (Generalized System of Preferences) status. Such a move increased tariffs and strained economic relations between the two countries.
