Uttarakhand Cloudburst Update: Red Alert Declared Till Tomorrow

Uttarakhand Cloudburst Update: In a significant development, which occurred in the state of Uttarakhand, India. A huge cloud burst occurred on the 5th of August, 2025.  in the upper catchment of the Kheer Ganga (Kheer Gad) river, near the nestled village of Dharali in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. This tragic cloud burst has triggered disastrous flash floods and landslides, sweeping the homes, shops, vehicles. And even some hotels and accommodations, heavily used by many pilgrims heading towards Gangotri Dham.


Uttarakhand Cloudburst Update

At least four people are dead, while more than 50 are said to be missing along with an intensified rescue operation. Among those missing are 8 to 10 Indian Army personnel stationed at lower Harsil. Caught up in the disaster while engaged in relief work within the area.

Widespread Damage and Infrastructure Disruption
Floodwater damages around 20 to 25 hotels and houses, and landslides block 163 roads. Including national and state highways, thus hampers approaches to the affected zone which is situated about 140 km from Dehradun.


Emergency Response & Rescue Efforts
Rescue teams from the Indian Army’s Ibex Brigade, SDRF, NDRF, ITBP. Local disaster respond forces reached the site in minutes of the occurrence, with about 150 personnel engaged in heavy rescue operations. Possibly evacuating around 20 people and providing medical aid. Although it has delayed deployment because of bad weather currently prevailing, the Indian Air Force (IAF) put its Chinook and Cheetah helicopters on stand-by for the operation.

Red Alert Across Uttarakhand Announced
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued the statewide red alert for August 5. And particularly for the districts of Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Almora, Pithoragarh, Rudraprayag, Champawat, Bageshwar, Nainital, and Udham Singh Nagar. This area is expected to receive above 15 mm/hour of precipitation along with thunderstorms and lightning.

The Government suspended Schools and Anganwadis in several districts, and train services on key routes such as Haridwar-Dehradun were halted due to landslides and damage to tracks.

Concern in Context & Climate
Cloudbursts are everyday little but intense rains during monsoon; normally, they create havoc in case flash floods arise within minutes. Uttarakhand has witnessed several disastrous events like these in the past. The catastrophic flood of 2013 alone killed more than 6,000 people across the region. Experts say that the probability for such extreme events will be on the rise with increasing frequency coupled with unplanned infrastructure in fragile hills terrains.

Reactions by Government
According to the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, he was much concerned and even assured that no stone had been left unturned in relief efforts. Home Minister Amit Shah sent additional teams toward rescue. While Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami reassured that the rescue and relief operations were on a war footing. And coordinated with the state agency and central agencies.
