Manjula Shruthi, who was a popular serial actress with hits like Amruthadhaare, was loved by Amresh, an auto driver, more than two decades ago. The two got married 20 years ago following a romance and had two children of their own. But at home, everything was not so rosy. The couple fought frequently over the years and had a strained marriage.
Only three months ago, Manjula Shruthi made up her mind that she could no longer endure the frequent quarrels. She registered a police complaint against Amresh, charging him with dowry demands and harassment. The couple drifted apart, hoping distance would make the heart grow fonder.
The couple attempted to give their marriage another turn after police mediation. Last Thursday, they reunited, hoping for new beginnings.
Unfortunately, this effort at mending fences went horribly wrong. The police say that the next day, when their children were at college, Amresh attacked Shruthi. He reportedly sprayed her with pepper spray and then stabbed her several times in her ribs, thigh, and neck. In a horrific touch, he even smashed her head against a wall.
Upon hearing the noise, concerned neighbors ran in. They were able to bring the attack to a halt and promptly arranged for Shruthi medical assistance at Victoria Hospital.
Police arrested Amresh later. He now stands accused of attempted murder.
Viewers of Kannada TV and locals are shocked. Everyone knew Shruthi as a bubbling presence on television, and neighbours remain in shock over the brutality that occurred almost on their doorstep.
While Shruthi remains under treatment, citizens of Karnataka are waiting for her quick recovery, and for justice to prevail.
