Why Is Your Income Tax Refund Delayed? Steps to Check Status

Income Tax Refund Delayed: The deadline for filing income tax (IT) returns this year ended on September 16, 2025. Over seven crore people have filed their returns, and many are eagerly waiting for their refunds. Even those who filed their returns in June-July are still facing delays. While the Income Tax Department says that processing and e-verification of returns are happening quickly, many taxpayers wonder why refunds are delayed.

Income Tax Refund Delayed Reasons:

Generally, after filing and completing e-verification, refunds are credited to bank accounts within four to five weeks. If the refund is not received in this period, the following issues could be the cause:

Mismatch between taxpayer information summary (TIS), annual information summary (AIS), Form 26AS, and return details.

Notices or review requests from the IT Department.

Complex business income, capital gains, or multiple deductions.

Refund amounts exceeding ₹50,000.

Discrepancies in TDS data.

Errors in bank account validation or mismatched account names.

Incorrect IFSC code or closed bank account mentioned in the return.

PAN not linked with Aadhaar.

Understanding ITR Status

When checking the Income Tax Return (ITR) status, you may see:

Submitted and Pending for E-verification: Return is filed but e-verification is not complete.

Successfully E-verified: E-verification is complete, but processing is not done yet.

Processed: Return has been successfully processed.

Defective: Important details are missing or there are discrepancies. In this case, taxpayers receive notices under Section 139(9) and must correct errors promptly.

Case Transferred to Assessing Officer

If your return has serious discrepancies, it may be sent to the assessing officer. After submitting the requested details, the officer processes the return.

How to Check Refund Status

Log in to [incometax.gov.in](https://www.incometax.gov.in) using your PAN and password (ensure PAN is linked with Aadhaar). Go to the “View Your Refund Status” option under the e-file tab and select the assessment year. Your refund status will be displayed on the screen.

By following these steps, taxpayers can identify the reason for any delay and take corrective action to receive their income tax refund without further issues.
