PM Modi Visit to China:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, which takes place from August 31 to September 1, 2025 .If confirmed, this trip will mark his first visit to China since 2018, following the border tensions in eastern Ladakh.
The visit is likely to be combined with a trip to Japan for an annual summit. It will be an important diplomatic event as it involves not only discussions on regional security but also relations between India and China, two major players in the region. PM Modi last met Chinese President Xi Jinping in October 2024 during the BRICS Summit in Kazan. Despite the strained relations between the two countries, the meeting helped ease tensions, especially concerning border issues. They discussed ways to maintain peace and stability along the disputed border.
During their October meeting, PM Modi emphasized that peace on the border should be the primary focus for both nations. He reiterated that mutual respect, trust, and sensitivity should be the foundation of their relationship. President Xi also acknowledged the importance of enhancing communication and cooperation between the two nations, particularly in managing differences and promoting global stability.
India and China had earlier in June 2025 agreed to hold talks to resolve key concerns, especially in trade and economics. Both nations have worked towards stabilizing their bilateral ties, particularly after the military face-off in Ladakh, which led to a significant shift in their relationship.
In addition, China has expressed its commitment to fighting terrorism and maintaining regional security. However, despite the improved dialogue, differences remain, such as disagreements over defense-related issues. India’s stance has been to safeguard its national interests, particularly in defense and energy sourcing, regardless of external pressure.
Leaders at the SCO Summit in China will discuss these critical issues further, especially as both countries aim to cooperate more on regional matters.
