Flying can be expensive but with a few clever strategies, you can at least ease some of your off-airport costs. Maybe you can even snag a hot drink on them or a beauty sample? Airport’s can actually provide you with a lot of valuable items/services — if you know where to look.
Carmen, a travel writer and television host, revealed her top five airport hacks on Instagram. In a July 8 post she explained how to get free airport stuff without feeling weird or awkward. All her ideas are easily followed and could make your travel itself a better experience too.
Here are Carmen’s best five airport travel hacks:
1. Bring your own tea bags or coffee
Most cafés or lounges will give travellers hot water free of charge for no fee. Instead of spending money for airport tea or coffee (costing £4 and more), bring your own tea bags or instant coffee. Simply ask for hot water and make your drink on the go. It’s a little trick but it saves every time you travel.
2. Bring a Reusable Cup or Bottle
Be sure to always have a reusable cup or bottle with you. Not only is this better for the planet but better for your wallet too. Quite a few cafés would be happy to fill your cup with hot water, and most airports have water fountains that you can refill your bottles for free. You don’t have to spend a fortune on bottled water!
3. Make the Most of Free Beauty Samples
While you are at the airport, one fun way to spend time, is to visit the beauty counters at the airport. You can ask them to try a few things, moisturisers serums, perfumes, etc.. These samples are free and it really feels like you are being pampered before your trip. You are able to kill time and leave feeling fresh.
4. Check Out More Discreet Charging Locations
Is your phone dying? Before rushing to a charging station, you can do an airport scavenger hunt looking for outlets that are not the busy charging stations! Think behind the TV screens, vending machines or even want to a corner of the airport. Airports have more outlets than you think; no one usually looks in the neglected locations. Less busy outlets could give you a place to recharge (and maybe a few minutes of peace of mind)!
5. Use the Click-and-Collect Option
In some airports, mainly in the US and UK, there are pharmacies such as Boots or Walgreens which allow you to order things online to pick up at the airport. This is a handy option to get around paying “airport prices” for medicines, snacks, and toiletries. You can buy them at the normal price and save yourself.
