Abortions in Telangana Rise In Five Years: Key Reasons Explained

Abortions in Telangana Rise In Five Years. So far, Telangana has been on record as the state where medical terminations of pregnancy (MTP) have seen strong contention within the last five years-the latest records show that there have been a dramatic ten-fold rise in MTP. According to official figures, the percentage of abortions rose from 1,578 in FY21 to 16,059 in FY25.

Abortions in Telangana Rise

Many health experts blame various reasons, as follows:

Reporting Systems – Developing better reporting systems for government and private hospitals on MTP cases.

Increased Awareness – More women are familiar with their rights to safe abortion.

Greater Access to Health Services – Increased number of clinics and trained health workers in urban and semi-urban areas.

Changing Societal Attitudes: public perception of seeking abortion services has now changed.

The Trend is Similar in Andhra Pradesh

There is also a four-fold increase of MTP cases from 2,282 in FY21 to 10,676 in FY25 in Andhra Pradesh, with both states hinting broadly at a shift in reproductive health patterns in the southern region of the country.

National Trend: MTPs

During FY 2024-25, these were the top-five states with the highest number of abortions:

Maharashtra

Tamil Nadu

Assam

Karnataka

Rajasthan

Having a better healthcare facility probably may support this huge count in reporting numbers.

Demand for Preventive Safe Measures

Whereas huge figures in MTP imply increasing access to safe procedures, they also tilt towards a need for prevention:

Affordable and widely available contraceptives.

Comprehensive sex education in schools.

Community awareness programs on family planning.

The escalated incidence of abortion can be seen in both states as a marker of increased accessibility to health care but also, in some ways, a major gap in the preventive measures of reproductive health. This is the challenge that authorities now have to face: balancing women with greater knowledge of reproduction rights with awareness and prevention strategies against unintended pregnancies in future.
