In a groundbreaking move, the Konkan Railway is launching a service to ferry private cars between Mumbai and Goa by train. The service will begin on August 23, just in time for Ganeshotsav, a major festival in Maharashtra. This is a first for India, offering travelers a unique alternative to the long road journey.
The train service will depart from Kolad, Maharashtra, at 5 pm and reach Verna, Goa, by 5 am the next day. With a journey time of just 12 hours, this service drastically reduces the time taken by road, which can stretch to 20-22 hours depending on traffic conditions.
Each train will have 20 wagons, with two cars in each. A total of 40 cars will be ferried per train. Travelers can relax as their cars are securely fastened. Belts will hold the cars in place, and all handbrakes will be engaged. Passengers, however, cannot stay in their cars during the journey.
Each car’s freight charges will be Rs 7875 in both directions. For passengers, the service is equally convenient. You can travel in the 3AC coach for just Rs 935 or opt for the 2S class seating for a fare of Rs 190. The train allows up to three passengers per car, with two traveling in the 3AC coach and one in the seating-cum-luggage (SLR) coach.
Travelers are advised to report to the station at least three hours before departure, by 2 pm, to ensure a smooth journey. The service will run on a trial basis, with the train needing at least 16 car bookings to operate. If fewer than 16 cars are booked, the service will be canceled.
