Pandemic threat: The coronavirus, which first emerged in Wuhan, China, in December 2019, has become a pandemic and has swept the world. This virus has torn the world apart. It has left a legacy of damage never seen in history. It has caused massive loss of property and lives. However, experts have repeatedly warned that the threat of such pandemics in the future is inevitable. Recently, the World Health Organization has also issued similar warnings. It has said that there is a threat of another pandemic, which could happen now or in 20 years.
The world is still recovering from the devastation caused by the coronavirus pandemic that broke out five years ago. The bitter memories of the pandemic are still fresh in our minds. However, the World Health Organization (WHO) has recently warned that the world is facing another pandemic. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that this is inevitable and could happen at any time. Therefore, he advised people to be prepared. He made these comments at the WHO Pandemic Agreement meeting held in Geneva.
Tedros reminded the world of the damage caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. He said that another pandemic will not stop until the situation improves. He said that it could come in 20 years or tomorrow. But, he called for it to come for sure and to be prepared for it. Tedros said that this is not a theoretical risk, but an epidemiological certainty. He said that many people have died due to Covid, as well as causing huge damage to the global economy.
“We have all seen the devastation caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Although the official death toll is 7 million, the actual number is estimated to be 20 million. In addition to the loss of life, it has caused more than $10 trillion in damage to the global economy. The 1918 flu pandemic killed 50 million people. This is twice as many as Corona,” Tedros said.
He expressed hope that a consensus would be reached among member states on the pandemic agreement. “The world needs a strong signal of unity for a common goal. This agreement will not infringe on the sovereignty of any country in any way. It will strengthen national sovereignty and international action,” Tedros assured. The WHO chief said that if everyone is united, the pandemic can be fought. He suggested that the world should be prepared to face the coming threat.
