Antibiotics No Longer Working:
Antibiotics have saved millions of lives for many years. They help cure bacterial infections and protect people from serious illnesses. But now, experts say antibiotics are slowly losing their power. The main reason is the careless and unnecessary use of these medicines.
Many people take antibiotics without a doctor’s advice. Some stop the medicine halfway when they start feeling better. Because of this, bacteria are learning how to fight the medicines. These strong bacteria are called drug-resistant bacteria, and they are very difficult to treat.
A new study from the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology (AIG Hospital), Hyderabad, has given a serious warning. The hospital studied patients in India and other countries like the US, Italy, and the Netherlands. The results showed that the problem is much worse in India. According to the study, 83% of people who came for endoscopy in India had multi-drug resistant bacteria in their bodies. This means the usual medicines used for infections are no longer working for many patients.
Doctors say that normally they use three different lines of antibiotics to treat infections. But now, these three lines are failing in many cases. Because of this, they are forced to use fourth-line medicines. There are only two such medicines available, and if bacteria become resistant to them too, doctors fear there will be no treatment left.
The study was published in the Lancet journal during “Antibiotic Stewardship Week” (November 18–25), which focuses on the responsible use of antibiotics.
1. Take antibiotics only if a doctor recommends them.
2. Do not ask for antibiotics when you have viral infections like cold or flu.
3. Always complete the full course of antibiotics.
4. Keep your surroundings clean.
5. Take vaccines on time.
6. Do not give antibiotics to animals without a vet’s advice.
Dr. Reddy says India must bring strict laws to stop the misuse of antibiotics. If more than 80% of patients already have drug-resistant bacteria, even small infections may become dangerous in the future. A nationwide awareness movement is needed to protect public health.
