Sex Work Stats: It is well known that India, which is ranked first among the countries with the largest population in the world, is ranked third among the countries with the highest number of HIV victims. While a total of 2.3 million people are suffering from HIV, the government is trying hard to reduce this number. On the other hand, a recent Programmatic Mapping and Population Size Estimation (PMPSE) study was conducted to find out the number of HIV victims. Shocking things have come to light in this. It has been found that Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are in the forefront of the states with the largest number of female sex workers in the country.
It has been found that Karnataka has the highest number of female sex workers in the entire country. In this state alone, 15.4 percent of women are engaged in prostitution. After that, 12 percent of women in Andhra Pradesh make a living by selling their bodies. In Maharashtra, 9.6 percent, 8.9 percent in Delhi, and 7.6 percent in Telangana, women are engaged in sex work. However, the total number of female sex workers in the country is 9 lakh 95 thousand 499, of which more than half (53 percent) are from the above five states. This has led the governments of these five states to express serious concern.
According to a study published in PLOS Global Health, the survey was conducted in 28 states and all union territories of the country. The survey was conducted by a team led by Pradeep Kumar of the National AIDS Control Society . As part of this, 43,579 hotspots were identified in 642 districts across the country where female sex workers are present. Out of these, 34 hotspots have more than 5,000 female prostitutes. Especially, there are five districts in Andhra Pradesh and six districts in Telangana. It is known that there are female sex workers in a total of 16,095 villages. However, Telangana is at the top of the list of hotspots with the highest number of female sex workers.
The survey found that there were 38 female sex workers in each hotspot. It found that there were 29 in AP. However, while this number is very low in many states, the Telugu states have the highest number of female sex workers. Nationally, there are only 8 female sex workers per hotspot on average. On the other hand, the survey found that home-based prostitution is prevalent. 55.1 percent of the hotspots identified across the country are doing this work secretly at home. Of these, 14 percent of female sex workers work through 10,718 network operators, and 9 percent work through the Lick Worker Scheme villages.
There are 568 mapped network operators in Telangana. This is the highest in the country. In AP, an average of 10 female sex workers are found working exclusively in Link Worker Scheme villages. In Telangana, this number is 8. Also, the survey said that there are 25 transgenders in every hotspot in Telangana. This is also the top position in the country. Then there are 24 in Delhi, 21 in Gujarat, and 20 in Maharashtra. While 96 thousand 193 transgenders are doing sex work across the country, the survey revealed that 90.8 percent of them are in hotspots.
Similarly, Telangana also topped the list of male sex workers. While there are 50 male sex workers per hotspot, Delhi has 29 and Goa has 27. And AP has 6.3 percent of the male sex workers population. Although this number is low in Telangana, the high number of male sex workers in hotspots is a cause for concern.
