While medical science has made great progress in treatment, experts now say that simple lifestyle habits, like drinking enough water every day, may play an important role in prevention.

Recent studies highlight that water does much more than just quench thirst. It helps regulate blood pressure, supports heart health, and even reduces the risk of dangerous vascular conditions. In fact, drinking the right amount of water daily can have both short-term and long-term benefits for the body.

Long-term benefits of hydration

One large study followed more than 116,000 people over 19 years. The results showed that people who consumed more water had a lower risk of dying from heart disease. Every extra glass of water per day reduced the risk of cardiovascular-related deaths by about 3%. The study also noted a small reduction in deaths from other causes. While water alone cannot prevent all diseases, staying hydrated seems to protect the heart over time.


Short-term effects on the body

Another study in 2025 tested how water affects the body immediately. Healthy adults were given one glass of water, and within an hour, their blood pressure and heart rate dropped slightly. These changes, though temporary, showed how hydration supports heart function and reduces stress on the cardiovascular system. Even small reductions in blood pressure can make a big difference for people prone to hypertension.

Why water is the best choice

Proper hydration benefits almost every system in the body. It helps maintain blood flow, improves nutrient transport, and reduces strain on the heart. On the other hand, dehydration thickens the blood, raises heart rate, and increases the risk of stroke. Unlike sugary drinks or alcohol, water is calorie-free, harmless, and even helps lower other risk factors such as weight gain and inflammation.
