Can You Eat Curd With Fish? Myth and Fact Exposed

For decades, Indian households have warned against consuming curd (dahi) with fish. The belief that this combination causes some skin disease or major digestive upset are widespread-and, perhaps in this case, there is scientific evidence to substantiate it, or it may be just one more food myth passed down generations? Can You Eat Curd With Fish? Myth and Fact Exposed.

Myth and Fact Exposed:

In Ayurveda, foods are classified based on their own properties. Fish is considered “hot” (ushna virya), while curd is “cold” or cooling (sheeta virya). According to Ayurveda, the conjugation of foods with the opposite properties creates an imbalance in the doshas of the body (Vata, Pitta, Kapha), which may cause potential repercussions on skin ailments or digestive disturbances. Hence, Ayurveda recommends against the mixing of any animal protein type like fish with fermented dairy.

Scientific View

Modern nutritionism has produced no evidence that curd and fish eaten together can lead to skin diseases such as vitiligo/leucoderma. No clinical evidence shows that this combination creates white patches or troubles of any serious concern in apparently healthy individuals.

In fact, curds and fish might not be a combo so terrible after all, since they are rather frequently paired in cuisines around the world. Consider the likes of Bengali doi maach (fish in curd gravy), Greek fish dishes served with tzatziki, or Turkish meze with yogurt-or those who take them on board.

Cautions

People with sensitive digestive systems, poor immunity, or a history of food allergens may suffer from minor bloating or indigestion caused by the combination of rich protein sources like fish and dairy. In such situations, it is best to either keep them apart or seek an appointment with a dietitian.
