Cetirizine Tablet Can Make You Sleepy: Is It Safe or Not?

Cetirizine Tablet: Cetirizine is a very common medication for skin rashes, itchy eyes, a runny nose, and even for sneezing. This is a very common antihistamine medication for all these types of rashes. This medicine is available in pill, liquid, and even chewable tablet form. This medicine is advised only for adults and children above six years of age. Most people have experienced dizziness and sleepiness after consuming this medicine. Let’s now understand is cetirizine is safe or not.

Approximately 5–14% of users experience mild tiredness, even though cetirizine is a “second-generation” antihistamine and is less prone to cause drowsiness than older drugs such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl). Some children become restless instead of sleepy.

Why Cetirizine Can Make You Sleepy:

  • Histamine Blockade: Histamine blocking is beneficial for allergies but reduces alertness slightly.
  • Individual Sensitivity: The main cause for an increase in sleepiness is due to age, metabolism or even pre-existing tiredness.
  • Dose and Interactions: Never try to consume high dosages; it is recommended to take as per the doctor. Also, it is advised not to consume with or after alcohol, as this can increase drowsiness.
  • Minor Brain Penetration: Even a minimal amount crossing the blood-brain barrier can produce mild sedation.
  • Common Side Effects of Cetirizine: The most common side effects after consuming this tablet are drowsiness, dry mouth, headache, and mild stomach upset.
  • Rare Side Effects of Cetirizine: According to the medical experts, the rare side effects of this medicine are dizziness, insomnia, and severe allergic reactions. Get medical attention right away if you have a fast heartbeat, confusion, or extreme sleepiness.
