Diwali 2025, the grand festival celebrated across India, falls on October 20, 2025. This festival signifies the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness. It also celebrates Lord Ram’s return to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana. On this day, homes are decorated with diyas, flowers, and rangolis, and families perform Lakshmi Puja to invite prosperity and happiness.
According to Drik Panchang, the Amavasya Tithi (new moon day) begins at 3:44 PM on October 20 and ends at 5:54 PM on October 21. The most auspicious time for Lakshmi Puja varies by city. In Delhi, the puja muhurat is from 7:08 PM to 8:18 PM, while in Mumbai, it is from 7:41 PM to 8:40 PM. The Pradosh Kaal, the evening twilight period, is considered the most favorable time for worship.
To perform the puja, devotees prepare all essential items in advance. These include:
Idols or pictures of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha
A clean red or yellow cloth to place the idols
A copper, brass, or silver plate (thali) for offerings
Diyas (oil lamps), incense sticks, camphor, and flowers
Fruits, sweets, dry fruits, and coins symbolizing wealth
Rice, turmeric, sandalwood paste, betel leaves, and a small broom for symbolic cleaning
Optional items include a Kalash filled with water and topped with a coconut and mango leaves.
1. Clean the house and decorate it with diyas and rangoli.
2. Place the idols of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha on a clean cloth facing east or north.
3. Take a bath and wear clean clothes.
4. Begin the puja by invoking Lord Ganesha, offering him flowers, sweets, and incense while chanting “Om Ganeshaya Namah.”
5. Then worship Goddess Lakshmi with flowers, fruits, and lighted diyas while chanting “Om Shri Mahalakshmyai Namah.”
6. Offer rice mixed with turmeric, sweets, and money to the idols.
7. Perform the Aarti with a lit diya or camphor and sing traditional prayers.
8. Distribute prasad to all family members.
9. Keep the lamps burning throughout the night to welcome the Goddess of Wealth.
