A poor lorry driver from Japan discovered a shocking truth at age sixty. He was switched at birth in a hospital error. His biological family was wealthy and successful. He grew up in poverty instead. This 2013 legal case recently regained online attention.
The wealthy family’s younger sons grew suspicious. Their elder brother mistreated their aging father. He did not share their mother’s inheritance fairly. The brothers also noticed his different appearance. Their late mother had shared a strange memory. A nurse changed the baby’s clothes after bathing him.
The brothers started out their investigation by collecting evidence in secret. They took their older brother’s cigarette butt for DNA testing. The testing in 2009 confirmed their fears that he was not their biological brother. From the hospitals’ records, they also found out about another man: a lorry driver who was living in Tokyo.
This lorry driver was born a mere thirteen minutes before their brother. The hospital records indicated this was an error and sent him to a poor family. His adoptive father died when the driver was only two years old. He lived in a home that did not have any appliances, and after working part-time, he graduated from secondary school. The neighbors of the lorry driver often said that he looked nothing like his parents.
The other baby raised as the heir to the family was given the best education and became a corporate executive. His three younger brothers are all corporate executives too. Unfortunately, the lorry driver’s biological parents died before he was able to locate them, and he never met his real mother or father.
In 2013, the lorry driver filed lawsuit against the hospital in Tokyo that was responsible for him being separated from his biological parents. Judge Masatoshi Miyasaka ruled in the driver’s favor. The court acknowledged the significant error made by the hospital in immediately separating him from his biological parents and that he lost a life of financial comfort and opportunity as a result.
