Mosquitoes Attract: Did you ever notice that some individuals are more attractive to mosquitoes than others? Although body heat and sweat account for their attraction, evidence indicates that mosquitoes also have a preference based on blood type.
Many studies indicate that mosquitoes are attracted to the following blood types in order of preference:
1. Blood type O – Most desirable because individuals with this blood type secrete certain chemicals which are attractive to mosquitoes.
2. Blood type B – Less desirable than the O type but more desirable than others.
3. Blood type AB – Halfway in between with regard to mosquito desire.
4. Type A blood – This is the least appealing blood type since individuals with this type yield fewer skin chemicals that draw in mosquitoes.
Mosquitoes are said to sense these differences by detecting chemical cues emitted from the skin.
Blood type is only one of the influences on mosquito attraction. Other significant influences are:
– Carbon dioxide: Mosquitoes are more attuned to CO₂, so individuals who inhale more air are more likely to be prime targets.
– Body odor: Skin chemicals such as lactic acid and ammonia enhance mosquito attraction.
– Skin temperature: The warmer the skin, the more attractive the individual.
– Clothing color: Darker clothes make individuals more apparent to mosquitoes, raising the likelihood of being bitten.
No matter what your blood type is, you can do something to avoid mosquito bites:
– Apply effective insect repellents with DEET or citronella.
– Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothes to minimize visibility.
– Eliminate standing water to limit mosquito breeding.
