For centuries, people the world over have believed warm milk to be the divine elixir for a sound sleep. The tradition is widespread in India, where it is often suggested by the elders as a natural sedative. But is there any real science behind this integral tradition, or is it only a comforting ritual to help one’s sleep?


Does Milk Help You Sleep

Milk contains tryptophan, an amino acid which is synthesized to serotonin. It is a neurotransmitter influencing mood-and melatonin, hormone controlling the body’s sleep-wake cycle. It is thought that drinking milk may, therefore, increase the amount of melatonin in the body, inducing a feeling of drowsiness.

Nevertheless, nutritionists point out that with only a small amount of tryptophan present in one glass of milk. All on its own, it may not be strong enough to really calm someone. In fact, the warmness and comforting pre-bedtime ritual are thought to induce a greater sense of calm and relaxation in other individuals.


Comfort and Relaxation Factor

Warm milk can trigger a soothing psychological response. Just like having herbal tea before bed, sipping something warm can signal your brain to relax. This degree of comfort, coupled with milk’s slight natural sweetness. This may alleviate stress and allow your brain to drift towards sleep.

Besides its comforting virtues, it is safe to say that most people can down a glass of milk before bedtime. Provided that they like milk and are not lactose intolerant. Adding spices that aid sleep such as turmeric, cinnamon, or nutmeg. They can complement its relaxing effects while also doing your health some good.
