Fatty Liver Disease: Early Symptoms and What They Mean

Fatty Liver Disease: The liver is the largest internal organ in the human body. It helps digest food, store energy, and remove toxins. This organ performs over 500 vital tasks that support overall health. These include filtering harmful substances from the blood, producing bile, storing glucose, and processing nutrients. Healthy liver function is essential to staying well and active.


Fatty Liver Disease:

Fatty liver disease happens when extra fat builds up in liver cells. It comes in two types: alcoholic fatty liver disease and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). NAFLD has become a global health concern. About 30.2% of people worldwide may have this condition. The numbers are even higher in the Americas and Southeast Asia, reaching above 40%.

NAFLD occurs without alcohol as the cause. It often links to obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. It ranges from mild fat buildup (NAFL) to serious inflammation and scarring (NASH). Many call it a silent epidemic, as it often shows no early warning signs.


At night, symptoms may become more noticeable. Trouble sleeping is common. Inflammation and poor toxin removal disturb rest. Blood sugar may drop due to glycogen imbalance, causing further sleep issues.

Upper right abdominal pain can also keep people awake. The area may feel heavy or full. Appetite loss, especially at night, may signal liver issues. This can lead to poor nutrition and weight changes.

People may also notice mental fog or confusion. Toxins in the blood affect brain activity. Severe tiredness can occur even with rest. Legs and feet may swell from fluid retention, making sleep harder.

Itchy skin can happen when bile salts collect under the skin. This irritation often feels worse at night. Unplanned weight loss is another sign. When liver function drops, metabolism slows.

Jaundice causes yellow skin and eyes. It signals advanced liver disease and needs urgent care.

A healthy routine helps protect the liver. Balanced food, exercise, and good sleep support its function. Avoiding alcohol and smoking also helps. If any of these signs appear, especially at night, medical tests are needed. Early action prevents lasting damage.
