Most refrigerators have a dial or digital control to manage the temperature. It usually ranges from 0 to 5 or 1 to 7. A higher number means more cooling. In summer, setting the fridge to level 4 or 5 is ideal. But in winter, setting it between 2 and 3 is enough to keep food fresh and safe.
The perfect temperature for a fridge during winter is between 3°C and 4°C. This range helps keep milk, vegetables, and cooked food fresh without freezing them. For the freezer, the best temperature is between -18°C and -20°C, which remains steady throughout the year.
If your fridge has a digital display, you can set the exact temperature in degrees. Older models with number dials can be adjusted manually to 2 or 3. Always check that your food stays cool but not frozen.
Knowing why these changes matter helps you save electricity. The fridge compressor adjusts to the room’s temperature. In winter, when your kitchen is cooler, the compressor does not need to run as often. If you keep the same high cooling level used in summer, the fridge becomes too cold, and some food items like fruits or vegetables may spoil faster.
Food placement inside the fridge is also important. The upper shelves and door racks are slightly warmer, perfect for milk, juices, and sauces. The lower section is colder and better for meat, fish, and leftovers. Vegetables should stay in the crisper drawer, which controls moisture and prevents drying.
