The first and most important rule is to store fruits and vegetables separately. Fruits like bananas, guavas, and avocados release a gas called ethylene, which speeds up ripening and can spoil nearby vegetables. So, it’s best to keep fruits in one basket and vegetables in another.

Next, focus on temperature and humidity control. Items like onions and potatoes should not be stored in the fridge. Keep them in a cool, ventilated area instead. Vegetables such as carrots, beans, and cucumbers can be stored in breathable baskets or perforated bags. Avoid keeping fruits in overly humid places, as moisture can lead to mold.


Another important tip is to avoid washing fruits immediately after purchase. Washing them too early adds moisture, which causes them to rot faster. Clean them only before eating or cooking.

To control moisture, use paper towels or breathable plastic covers. Wipe away any visible water droplets and keep the fruits dry. Also, make it a habit to check your storage daily — if one fruit spoils, it can affect others nearby. Remove any damaged items right away.

Some natural methods like vinegar or saltwater preservation can also help. Soaking carrots, cucumbers, and radishes in vinegar water keeps them fresh and adds extra flavor. You can also try canning tomatoes and beans for longer storage.

Lastly, use airtight or breathable bags to protect fruits from air, humidity, and ethylene gas. For example, wrapping apples in a slightly damp cloth and keeping them in a perforated bag can make them stay fresh for up to 4–6 weeks.

Following these easy household hacks not only keeps your fruits and vegetables fresh and nutritious, but also saves money and reduces waste.
