Ganesh Chaturthi Vrat: One of India’s most loved festivals, Ganesh Chaturthi, is celebrated to pay homage to Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles and bringer of wisdom. On these sacred days, believers fast and follow certain dietary rules in an attempt to retain their purity and devotion. Following is a general guideline of what to eat and what to abstain from if you plan to follow the vrat (fast).


What to Eat:
Worshippers normally prefer satvik food, which comprises simple vegetarian food without garlic or onions, during Ganesh Chaturthi fasting. Popular items are fruits, dried fruits, and milk products. Sabudana khichdi, kuttu or rajgira pooris, and aloo preparations without normal spices are favorite vrat foods. Prasadam is also offered, followed by the intake of fresh coconut, jaggery, and sweets such as modak, which is Lord Ganesha’s favorite sweet. Beverages such as milk, lemon water, and coconut water help maintain energy levels during the day.

What to Avoid:
Heavy spices, onions, garlic, and non-vegetarian food are strictly forbidden. Also, as alcohol, tobacco, and junk food are considered impurities in the process of vrat, devotees refrain from them. Some opt for flour made from buckwheat (kuttu), water chestnut (singhara), or amaranth (rajgira) instead of cereals like wheat and rice. To keep their diet as natural and fresh as possible, fasting followers also avoid consuming packaged or processed foods.

The vrat stresses faithfulness, discipline, and purity along with food restrictions. Followers strengthen their bond with Lord Ganesha by consecrating their energies towards prayers, aartis, and reciting mantras and refraining from indulgences and consuming wholesome food.
