Hartalika Teej is a festival in Northern India to denote the sacrifices of Goddess Parvati for Lord Shiva. Women-whether married or unmarried during Hartalika Teej, fast and worship to ask for a happy and blessed married life.
During Teej, the women observing the fast observe a rigorous fast called the nirjala vrat, where they do not consume any food or even water. This vrat is to symbolize that wherein one’s utmost faith and devotion exist for Goddess Parvati.

Hindus fast and observe puja rituals using the sunrise tithi for the days, which is also how women observing the fast dress. Since 26 August is the sunrise tithi, women are observing the fast on 26 August.
Wake up in the early morning before sunrise and take a holy bath.
Wear clean traditional clothing (usually in green or yellow).
Take a sankalp (pledge) to successfully fast with devotion and truth.
Clean the puja area and set it up with flowers, rangoli, and diyas (lamps).
Place and arrange the idols of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, and Lord Ganesha.
If you are able, make a clay idol of Parvati and place it next to Shiva.

Goddess Parvati completed this hard fasting and prayer to marry Lord Shiva. With her strong devotion Lord Shiva was impressed and accepted her. It is a celebration of love, sacrifice, and faith in marriage. Women celebrate their matrimonial bliss, and unmarried girls pray for a happy and helpful husband.
