Healthy Janmashtami Fast: Expert-Approved Food List

Janmashtami is an important Hindu festival celebrated throughout India to commemorate the birth of Lord Krishna. Many devotees observe a vrat (fast) on this day in pursuit of blessings. During your fast, you should consume foods that provide energy and do not upset (the stomach).

Fasting does not mean starvation, especially since there is no need to struggle. You may consume light nutritious foods that are easily digestible and that do not cause acidity or fatigue.

What Can You Eat During Janmashtami Fast?:

1. Hydrating Drinks

Drink coconut water, lemon water, or fresh juices without sugar. They keep you hydrated and give you energy fast. Herbal teas can also help with acidity and weakness you might feel during the day to help reduce the chances of lethargy.

2. Fruits
Consume, bananas, apples, papaya, watermelon, muskmelon. Fruits provide natural sugar, fiber, and water for energy, digestion, and hydration.

3. Dry Fruits
Include soaked almonds, walnuts, cashews, raisins, and dates. These nutrients contain healthy fats and proteins which provides lasting energy.

4. Milk and Dairy Products
Consume health foods like curd, paneer, kheers made with sabudana or makhana. Milk or dairy provides calcium, proteins, and probiotics which can help keep the gut healthy.

5. Grains That Are Gluten-Free
You can consume foods that are made from vrat grains, such as buckwheat (kuttu), water chestnut (singhar), and Amarathus (rajgira) which can help provide energy and calories while being light, gluten-free foods for your body.

6. Cooking Oils that are Healthy
Use ghee, coconut oil, or peanut oil cautiously. These healthier fats will keep you satisfied longer and help your body absorb nutrients.

7. Complex Carbohydrates
Eat sweet potatoes, boiled potatoes, sabudana khichdi, and makhana as they will give you a steady and slow release of energy so as not to feel exhausted.

What to Avoid When Doing Janmashtami Fast

1. Deep-fried products

No fried kuttu puris, or any fried pakoras and chips. Fried foods are heavy and hard to digest, which can make you feel bloated, and cause acidity.

2. Oily and Spicy Foods

Limit chili powder and the amount of oil you are eating. Spicy foods can irritate your stomach and lead to more acidity during fasting.

3. Refined Sugar and Processed Snacks

Avoid sugary drinks or sugary sweets, and packaged snacks. Sugar will spike your sugar levels and afterwards you will feel depleted.

4. Caffeine

Limit strong tea and coffee. Trying to drink caffeine on an empty stomach can cause acidity and lead to dehydration.

5. Overeating After Fasting

Avoid having a large meal after fasting. Eating a large meal after fasting will stress out your stomach and lead to gas, bloating, and tiredness.
