The father of inspiration is worshipped in the homes with much reverence or in assemblies that are set up as pandals. “Ganpati Bappa Morya” goes on with the maximum noise at home and in public during the Ganesh Chaturthi days.

Historical Roots

The festival, Ganesh Chaturthi, is observed most reverently in the state of Maharashtra and began as a family observance that was transformed by Maratha rulers to a popular and community-wide observance. In 1893, Bal Gangadhar Tilak catalyzed Ganesh Chaturthi’s popular observance as a public ceremony, later defended by Tilak as an act against British rule. At the time, the British allowed religious ceremonies to occur, therefore Tilak believed religion could unite everyone and reinforce their cause

Rituals

Reverence begins months before Ganesh Chaturthi. Carpenters and artisans create beautiful clay idols of Ganesh. Idols are collectively installed by celebrations in homes and pandals publicly under the diktats of community leaders. Following the Hindu lunar calendar, Ganesh Chaturthi goes until Anant Chaturdashi day.

Day one is designated for the special ceremony of Prana Pratishtha, where devotees chant numerous mantras to invite the presence of Ganesh in the idol. Devotees then offer Ganesh sweets, flowers, and coins. They mark this to commence worship by anointing the idol with red sandalwood. With the rest of the Puja days begin at evening with the Aarti; at midday, however, certain Puja on special days are considered to have great importance.

Celebrations

Communities complete publicly-installed pandals for competition. The most popular pandal in Maharashtra has appeared with great significance. Lalbaugcha Raja, since its inception in 1934, draws the biggest crowds. Devotees line up in droves to view the display, and the streets echo with life, sound, celebration, excitement as the festival anoints all. On Anant Chaturdashi, celebrants process into the streets as idols where the street parade is paraded, with singing, celebration, and music.
