Social Media Screentime: In today’s digital world, Gen Z (born between 1997-2012) youth live completely surrounded by technology and social media. They are called digital natives. They cannot stay away from their smartphones and social platforms for even a moment. They spend most of their lives on them.
According to a report by Mumbai-based tech firm Vicino, Gen Z youth spend around 4-6 hours every day on social media platforms. They spend a lot of time on Instagram Reels, Stories, YouTube short videos, Snapchat, Reddit, memes, and peer-generated content. Most of this time is spent watching short videos and stories, which immediately grab their attention and keep them scrolling.
Instagram: For Reels, Stories
YouTube: For short videos, tutorials
Snapchat: For direct communication with friends
Reddit: For memes, community discussions, and trending topics
Short-form videos, i.e. 15-30 second reels or shorts.
Memes, which include comedy, politics, and witty comments.
Peer-generated content, where real people, real stories.
Experts say that you should know how much time your children spend on their phones every day. Spending 4 to 6 hours on social media can be detrimental to their health. This can lead to problems like eye strain, sleep problems, lack of concentration, and reduced social interaction. So, you should take care of your children’s health yourself.
