How Short Circuits Happen: Causes and Prevention Tips

Short Circuits: A short circuit is a sudden event. It occurs in a newly installed electrical system or old wiring. Electricity wants to flow through the path of least resistance, which is the shortest path. But when a short circuit occurs, the current takes a different path instead of following the circuit.

When a short circuit occurs, all the devices suddenly turn off. Lights, TVs, computers, outlets, etc., turn off suddenly. This is the first sign of a short circuit.

Causes of a short circuit:

1. When insects or animals bite and cut the wire.
2. Water or other liquids that come into contact with the wire.
3. Loose connections in the iron box.

4. Old or damaged switches, lights, appliances, and other electrical devices.
5. If you screw them into the wall so that they touch the wires.

6. Deterioration of electrical cable sheathing.

7. Excessive current flow.

A short circuit is harmful because it can cause injury or death through electric shock or fire. Electricity is flowing through a wire, but this can happen if you touch it. To prevent this, you should make sure that the circuit is turned off at your breaker box before you start working on it. However, wearing insulated electrical safety gloves provides additional safety.

What to do if a short circuit occurs

Change the circuit

After identifying which circuit is causing the problem, you can change it separately.

Operate safely

Turn off the circuit breaker if it is not already turned off. The handle of a turned-off circuit breaker will be towards the nearest side, not in the center of the service panel.

Equipment

Identify all equipment on the circuit. Identify which outlets, switches, appliances, lights, and air conditioners are on it.

Inspection

Inspect the outside of each device on the circuit. Look for blown fuses and signs of short circuits on individual devices. Look for strong odors, melted plastic, or burn marks.
