How to Change a Diaper the Right Way to Keep Your Baby Rash-Free

How to Change a Diaper the Right Way to Keep Your Baby Rash-Free

Changing diapers in the right way is the basic step to keep your baby’s delicate skin healthy. New parents generally feel a big challenge in the task. If they do it the wrong way, they can cause rashes and infections in their baby. Therefore they should always follow these simple steps to have perfect diaper changes every time.

Prepare Your Supplies First

Before you start, collect all the items you need and put them within easy reach. A new diaper and baby wipes are a must-have. Also, keep diaper cream and hand sanitizer at the ready. The place where you change the diaper should be a safe and flat surface. Do not leave your baby alone under any circumstances.

Remove the Dirty Diaper

Carefully open the dirty diaper. Support the baby’s ankles in a gentle way. Lift the bottom a little bit. Take the diaper out from the back. Throw it away immediately.

Clean Your Baby Thoroughly

A baby wipe is a suitable choice for the cleaning process. Wipe from the front to the back every time. In this way you prevent urinary tract infections. Make sure that you have cleaned all the folds of the skin. Dry the area very gently.

Apply Protective Cream

Put on diaper cream of a high quality. Spread it out on the bottom and the thighs. The diaper cream will act as a moisture barrier and the skin will be protected from rashes and irritation. Don’t be in a hurry to come to the next step without doing this important one.

Put On the Fresh Diaper

Put the new diaper under your baby’s bottom. Make sure the back is a little higher than the front. Pull the tabs in a way that they are of the same length and fasten. If you have done it correctly you will be able to fit a finger between the diaper and your baby thus there will be enough room for movement.

Final Hygiene Steps

After you are done with the changing put on hand sanitizer and rub your hands. This action prevents germs from spreading. Later, wash your hands with soap. Throw all the used materials away. The changing area should be clean and ready for the next time.

When to Change Diapers

If you want your baby to be comfortable then, according to my experience, changing diapers every 2-3 hours is the right solution. If it is not too much of a hassle check the diaper quite often to see if it is still dry. Change the diaper  immediately, if the baby had a bowel movement and get rid of the waste without waiting for the usual changing times. Also, keep an eye out for the signs of diaper rash.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Ignore the temptation to wipe from back to front only. Be gentle and never use products that irritate the skin. While cleaning do not rub the skin. Make sure that your baby’s diapers are not too tight. Always wash your hands after handling the dirty diaper.

Benefits of Proper Changing

It will stop the baby from crying due to diaper rashes caused from improper changing. Infection will be reduced to almost none. The baby will be in a state of comfort at all times. This habit will help to keep the skin of your baby healthy. Besides that you will save a lot of money that can be paid to doctors.

Diaper Changing Essentials

You must always have all your supplies ready. Hypoallergenic baby wipes should always be used. Selecting the correct diaper size is of utmost importance. Change your baby in an area specifically designated for the purpose. Always be clean and hygienic.
