Cooking Oils for Healthy Heart:
Cooking oil is an essential part of every Indian kitchen. However, choosing the right one plays a big role in keeping your heart healthy. Oils high in unhealthy fats can increase cholesterol and raise the risk of heart diseases. On the other hand, oils rich in good fats can protect your heart and improve overall health.
According to cardiologist Dr. Rohit Madhav Sane, it’s important to choose oils that have more monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, as these help lower bad cholesterol (LDL) and reduce inflammation. Let’s look at some of the best and safest cooking oils for heart health.
1. Olive Oil:
Extra Virgin Olive Oil is considered one of the healthiest. It is rich in antioxidants and monounsaturated fats that improve blood vessel health and lower cholesterol. Regular use can reduce the risk of heart disease by nearly 19%.
2. Desi Ghee:
Though it has saturated fat, moderate use of traditional ghee can be good for the heart. It helps increase good cholesterol (HDL) and has anti-inflammatory properties. However, overuse can lead to cholesterol buildup.
3. Canola Oil:
Low in saturated fat and high in Omega-3 fatty acids, canola oil supports cardiovascular health. It is great for frying, baking, and daily cooking.
4. Soybean Oil:
This oil contains Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids and helps lower cholesterol levels. However, using too much can increase inflammation, so moderation is key.
5. Mustard Oil:
Rich in good fats, Omega-3, and Omega-6, mustard oil is one of the best options for Indian cooking. It remains stable even when heated at high temperatures.
6. Sunflower and Coconut Oils:
High-oleic sunflower oil is better than regular ones, while coconut oil should be used sparingly due to its high saturated fat content.
7. Palm Oil:
Palm oil contains vitamins A and E but has high saturated fat. It is best avoided for daily use.
