Ice Baths Aren’t for Everyone: Here’s Why

Ice Baths Aren’t for Everyone: Here’s Why

Nowadays, ice baths, i.e. bathing in cold water, have become a popular method for fitness and athletes. After tough workouts, competitions or heavy physical exertion, ice baths are taken to relax the muscles of the body, reduce swelling and refresh the body quickly. However, as useful as this process is, it can have adverse effects on the body if not done properly. Therefore, it is necessary to take care of some things before taking an ice bath.

Preparation before taking an ice bath

It is considered appropriate to keep the water temperature between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius before taking an ice bath. Water that is colder than that can be dangerous for the body. An ice bath should not be taken for more than 10 to 15 minutes. For this, fill a large tub with water, add ice to it, and then slowly immerse the body in it. Do not jump directly into cold water, as the sudden change in temperature can shock the body.

Health check-up and advice

People with heart disease, high blood pressure, respiratory disease, or other serious conditions should consult a doctor before taking an ice bath. Taking a cold bath can cause rapid changes in blood pressure, which can increase the risk of a heart attack. Also, children, the elderly, or pregnant women should avoid taking an ice bath.

Care during an ice bath

When taking an ice bath, decide whether to immerse the entire body or just the feet, knees, or some part of the muscles as needed. Do not immerse the face, chest, or head completely in the water. Keep your breathing controlled during the ice bath and get out immediately if you start shivering. It is important to have someone nearby for help at that time.

Aftercare for ice baths

Do not take a hot bath immediately after the ice bath. Give your body some time to come back to normal temperature. Cover your body with warm clothes and warm up your body with warm water or hot drinks. If your muscles are still sore, do light stretching or massage.
